In 2022, the Roma Education Fund (REF) began an historic new chapter in its work to transform education for Roma communities in Central and Eastern Europe. At the heart of REF’s strategic transformation is a shift towards building thriving and resilient Roma communities. REF’s transformation is defined by engagement – locally, nationally and internationally; and innovation, opening itself up to new ways of thinking and working.

REF’s NEW MISSION – To increase the Resilience of Roma communities in the face of social, economic, environmental, health, political changes and crises through Education.

REF’s NEW VISION

To create a supportive environment for every child, young person and parent with whom REF works, empowering them to develop personal resilience in rapidly changing societies.

To instil confidence and a sense of belonging, and to encourage active participation within their communities while emphasizing the importance of education as a catalyst for growth and development.

REF’s GOALS under the new strategy:

To create a model of change and innovation that other Roma and minority communities can adopt and that can also influence positive change in mainstream education

To equip Roma learners with in-demand knowledge and skills (including those required by the green and tech economy) in support of employment, demonstrating the positive economic potential of Roma

To promote gender equality and nurture Romani girls’ and women’s public engagement and leadership development.

To foster thriving and resilient Roma communities, with confidence, pride and a sense of belonging.
