In early January 2015 the Roma Education Fund (REF) Romania organized two training courses to improve the skills of 220 people who will actively be involved in the prevention and remedy of early school leaving by young Roma pupils currently living in the Central, North East, South East, South Muntenia and Bucharest-Ilfov regions of Romania.

As a component of the ESF-funded project, Educational Integrated Services for Roma Communities, the first training session, held January 16-18, 2015, trained 70 teachers of Romanian Language and Literature in techniques that aim to develop their strategies, teaching methods and evaluation techniques for working with Roma students who are at risk of dropping out. The teachers subsequently will be involved in the prevention early school leaving of 500 Roma pupils, of which half are girls.

A second training course was held January 23-25, 2015 for 150 teachers. The course focused on the implementation of regional Second Chance activities aimed to support Roma adults to complete their education. The purpose of this course was to help teachers acquire the professional skills such as counseling in adult education, negotiation techniques in the school-community relationship, and the adaptation of the teaching methods and processes tailored for adult education in line with Romanian and European legislation on equal opportunities.

During these short courses, participating teaching professionals were provided with a learning environment conducive to exploring, developing and refining existing approaches to address the issue of early school leaving by Roma pupils.
