News in 2007

  • The European Roma and Travellers Forum is looking for paid interns to assist the Secretariat of the Forum in the preparation of the Plenary Assembly 2007 and following EU conference (26 - 29 November 2007).

    Tasks include:

    • assisting in the preparation and mailing of conference documents;
    • assisting in the organisation of travels and accomodations;
    • answering correspondence and phone calls;
    • filing and managing databases;

    Person specification:

  • Romea Civic Association is organizing training in basic computer skills for Roma adults in Prague as of September 2007.

    The Romea Educational Centre also offers free of charge internet and computer access for the interested Roma population. According to the project manager, Mr. Popisil, there are over 200 Roma people who regularly come to the centre on a weekly basis.

    REF participated in the conference organized by UNESCO and the Council of Europe “Towards quality education for Roma children, Transition from early childhood to primary education.”

  • The secondary school “Bajram Curri”, located in the suburbs of Tirana, Albania is amongst the first educational institutions in the region, which are trying to implement useful methodologies that help in smoothing of the problem of cultural differences.

  • “Slovo 21” civic group has successfully closed its university preparatory course, as 14 of the 24 attendee students, all Romani, have been admitted to local universities.

  • 10 - 11 September 2007,  UNESCO

    Education for Roma children will be the focus of a meeting organized by UNESCO and the Council of Europe on 10 and 11 September at UNESCO Headquarters. Entitled “Towards quality education for Roma children: transition from early childhood to primary education”, the meeting will bring together experts – representatives of education ministries, members of international and regional organizations, academics, researchers and civil society stakeholders – from fifteen European countries.

  • On 9-11 August 2007 , the meeting of Committee of Education of ERTF took place in Supral, Poland.
    Organizers of the event were DG -II Social Cohesion of the Council of Europe and European Roma and Travellers Forum. The themes for discussion were the situation of Roma in Europe, problems of education for young Roma and their chances in modern societies of Europe and the world.

  • August 2007

    Visitors of the Sziget Festival 2007, Budapest were offered to attend a three-day program series on different kinds of interesting forums, related to Roma and the education of Roma. The main topics were school segregation, the system of minority self-governments and equal opportunities. The overall aim of the series was to strengthen and popularize tolerance.

  • 2 August 2007

    On the night of 2-3 August 1944, the "Gypsy camp" at the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp was liquidated after the last group of nearly 3000 Roma inmates there were gassed.
    Tomorrow, 2 August 2007, will be the 63rd anniversary of the dire massacre. On that day European Roma pay their tribute to their assasinated fellows, remebering the Roma Holocaust, the Pharrajimos.

  • July 17 2007

    The presidential commission on education has presented a report concerning the evaluation of the Romanian education system. Basescu, President of Romanian concluded that the Romanian education system is inefficient, inequitable and its quality is lower than the European standards.
